[Recipe] Meg's Energy Boosting Matcha + Why I Love This Japanese Tea

Just over three years ago, I would've given anything to have my morning cup of coffee, or occasionally needing a pick-me-up during some of my late night bartending gigs (sound familiar?). Simply, I was TIRED. Not only did I sometimes wake up tired (how does that even happen?), but I'd find myself crashing hard in the middle of the day. Even worse, I found myself on two separate occasions in an accident for falling asleep while driving. At the time, as terrible as it is, falling asleep at the wheel had become a common theme in my life. It didn't occur to me that it may have had something to do with my lifestyle and the food I was eating, or amount of coffee I was drinking because of how tired I was all the time, until I attended IIN.

Since graduating IIN, I've discovered the foods that support me and give me lasting energy, therefore, I no longer have a "need" for coffee or caffeine. Although, I do love the taste of a good brew every now and then, but I generally go for decaf because I simply don't need the caffeine anymore. That being said, I've found an amazing alternative that adds a little something to my day without getting the crashing feeling coffee often provides - Matcha

I. LOVE. MATCHA.

I'll drink it plain, make matcha latte's, put it in cookies or pancakes...it's so versatile and doesn't leave you with the coffee breath ;)

As an Italian, you wouldn't think I'd speak so highly of this Japanese drink, but it's my fav and I can't help it. What I love the most about Matcha is that it provides more sustainable energy and gives you a calm alertness. I started noticing how coffee made me feel super jittery throughout the day, so I had to make a change. That's when I found Matcha.

Matcha also provides:

+ higher levels of antioxidants - one of the best sources, by the way.

+ fiber and nutrients not found in coffee - such as, chlorophyll, vitamin A & C

+ amino acids that help boost metabolism & process caffeine more efficiently in the body

At first, I just loved the taste of matcha, and the fact that it's green was a bonus, but the more I learn the more I can't get enough. I look forward to my #MatchaMornings which is why I am providing one of my latest, most powerful recipes yet - my Energy Boosting Matcha! Ever have Bulletproof coffee? Well, it's kind of like that, only with Matcha :P

Directions:

1. Heat 2 1/2 cups of hot water; place Matcha in a bowl. Once the water is steaming, add just enough water to your matcha to make the paste - whisk together. Once Matcha is dissolved, add the rest of the water to your matcha.

2. Pour matcha + all other ingredients (except Nutmeg) in your blender and mix at low-medium power to froth your beverage - about 30 seconds.

3. Pour, dust with Nutmeg, serve, enjoy!
